In Guitar Hero, a Guitar Battle is a competition between two players or a player and a computer player. In Guitar Hero III, the players use power-ups to make their opponent miss. In Career Mode, the player faces Tom Morello (Mitch's Moose Lounge), Slash (Shanker's Island), and Lou (Lou's Inferno).

There is a Guitar Battle against Joe Perry in Guitar Hero: Aerosmith. It is played at the end of Career Mode, and, upon beating it, Joe Perry is unlocked as a playable character

In Guitar Hero World Tour, the format of the guitar battle format was changed. Power ups no longer appear. Instead, the player tries to bring the crowd meter all the way to their side, somewhat like the original Face-Off and Pro Face-Off modes.The two battles in World tour are against Zakk Wylde and Ted Nugent. However, Battle Mode is still available as a Vs. gametype.

Power-Ups

Amp Overload-Makes the notes flash on and off, making it harder to hit notes.

Broken String-Breaks a string. Any notes on the broken string cannot be played until the string is fixed by pressing the fret button repeatedly. (ex. If Broken String hits the Yellow string, you cannot play Yellow notes until you hammer the fret button endlessly to fix it.)

Death Drain (Sudden Death)-Slowly covers up the fretboard, making you lose the song. Also decreases the rock meter gradually.

Difficulty Up-Makes the difficulty of the song rise temporarily for one player. (ex. If you are on Medium and somebody hits you with Difficulty Up, you then play on Hard.)

Double Notes-Turns all notes into two-note frets temporarily. On Easy and Medium, this will also amp up the difficulty for a short while (ex. You are on Easy, and somebody hits you with Double Notes. Yellow notes become either yellow and red chords or yellow and blue chords.)

Lefty Flip-Temporarily flips around the noteboard to a lefty/righty style so that the opponent gets confused.

Mines (World Tour)-Adds black and white transparent mine notes that cause a large fall in the opponent's Rock Meter when hit.

Whammy Bar-Acts like a mega Broken String and renders the player unable to play notes until they press the Whammy bar repeatedly to fix all of the strings.

DS Power-Ups

Broken String-A string on the guitar will break, and the player has to drag one end of the string to the other end before the corresponding note can be played again.

Signature-An excited fan will shove their item in front of the player. The player must sign their item before they can play again.

Pyrotechnics-The guitar will catch fire and players will have to blow through the microphone to clear the guitar before playing. This powerup also occurs when the player has the microphone off.

Hyperspeed-Speeds up the fretboard.

Camera Flash-A fan takes a picture, blinding the player for a bit.

Screen Flip-The screens on the DS will flip over.

Amp Overload-The player's music will be muted. The player cannot advance the arrow to their side, but as long as the player hits notes, neither can the opponent.

Steal Item-Allows the player to steal an opponent's power-up.

Difficulty Up-Same effect as console version.

Difficulty Down-Decreases the difficulty of the user.

Bomb Notes-Same effect as Mines.

Shield-The opponent cannot attack you for a short while.
